Adventure: Count On Me
Rank: Lion (kindergarten)
Status: Elective
Selected activities: Shape-built lion; adult-partner domino count game; shape, color, and category sorting followed by a one-category build
Suggested meeting duration: 60 minutes
Estimated leader preparation: 20-40 minutes to prepare safe shape pieces for each Scout, sort reusable building pieces, and set up small activity stations; allow 10 minutes for collection and cleanup. Assumes up to six Scouts with adult partners. Per-Scout cutting or sorting makes preparation at least Medium.
About this adventure
Scouts make a lion using only squares, triangles, and circles; play a counting or number game with an adult partner or den; then sort items in multiple ways, count shapes in each category, and build using one category. The selected local delivery uses large prepared shapes and reusable building pieces. See the adventure page for approved plans and handouts..
Safety and respect
- Adults prepare any cut shapes before the meeting. Use large pieces, blunt-edge materials, and non-toxic adhesive; keep small counters out of mouths.
- Keep the floor and walkways clear. Offer table-top, seated participation and adult help with counting or placing shapes.
- Use large dominoes or another safe number-game set. Do not race children or make speed the measure of success.
- Let Scouts explain, point, or demonstrate. Avoid correcting every imperfect drawing; check the specified shape limits and sequence instead.
Meeting preparation
Overall preparation effort: Medium, driven by cutting and sorting one set of large shapes per Scout and preparing reusable shape/color building pieces. If the needed materials require a separate purchase, effort is at least Medium; extensive kit assembly could raise it to High.
- Prepare large squares, triangles, and circles before Scouts arrive. Provide enough pieces for each Scout’s lion picture; no child uses cutting tools for this plan.
- Set out a counting game and a mixed set of large blocks or shape pieces for the final sort-and-build activity.
- Confirm that the room supports three stations and that partners can assist each Scout.
- Tell families that all work is planned for the meeting; bring no coins or materials from home.
Supplies
- Large pre-cut squares, triangles, and circles in several colors
- Paper or reusable board and glue sticks, or another safe way to arrange shapes
- Large dominoes or another age-appropriate number-game set
- Reusable blocks or counters that can be sorted by shape, color, and one additional visible category
- Table coverings and a container for collected pieces
Pre and post meeting activities for scouts
Before
Bring a Lion adult partner. No advance counting task is needed.
After
No additional activity is needed if the Scout completes all three stations. If a sequence is unfinished, repeat that station with the adult partner and notify the leader.
Completion checklist
- Requirement 1: Scout made a lion using only squares, triangles, and circles.
- Requirement 2: Scout played a counting or number game with an adult partner or the den.
- Requirement 3: Scout sorted by shape, then color, then another category; counted the different shapes in each category; and built using just one category.

| 0:55-1:00 | Closing and completion check | Invite a quick share, collect pieces, and check each requirement’s steps. |
Leader notes and talking points
Welcome and opening (0:00-0:05)
- Set up: Keep each station’s materials separate and visible.
- Say: “Today we will make a lion from three kinds of shapes, play a number game, and sort before we build.”
- Ask: “Which shapes can you find on this table?”
- Do: Demonstrate one square, triangle, and circle; invite pointing as well as naming.
Shape-built lion (0:05-0:20)
- Say: “Use only squares, triangles, and circles to make your lion. You can decide where each shape goes.”
- Do: Give each Scout a prepared set. Let adult partners help place or glue shapes without drawing a different design for the Scout.
- Ask: “Which shapes did you use for the face?”
- Check: The final lion uses only the three permitted shape types. The pieces may vary in size and color.
Movement and reset (0:20-0:25)
- Do: Collect glue and shape scraps; offer seated stretches or a short walk to the next station.
- Say: “Let’s leave the table clear for our counting game.”
- Ask: “Are any pieces on the floor?”
Domino counting game (0:25-0:37)
- Say: “Take turns choosing a domino and counting the dots with your adult partner.”
- Do: Model counting dots together, then let pairs play at their own pace. The point is number play, not a particular game score.
- Ask: “How many dots do you see?”
- Check: Each Scout takes part in a counting or number game with an adult partner or the den.
Transition and sort demonstration (0:37-0:42)
- Do: Mix the large reusable pieces. Demonstrate sorting by shape, then regrouping the same items by color, then by another clear category such as size.
- Say: “We will sort the same pieces in three different ways.”
- Ask: “What is one way these pieces are alike?”
Sort, count, and build (0:42-0:55)
- Do: Guide Scouts through the order: sort by shape; sort by color; sort by one other category; count the different shapes in each category; build using pieces from one category only.
- Say: “First shape, then color, then a new way to sort. After counting, choose just one group to build with.”
- Ask: “How many triangles are in this group?”
- Check: Do not skip a sorting step or the shape count. The final structure uses only one category of the sorted materials.
Closing and completion check (0:55-1:00)
- Ask: “What did you sort before you built?”
- Do: Thank adult partners, close with a den cheer, and check the full sequence for requirement 3, not just the final build.
