About this adventure
Scouts make and use a Lion bag for Scouting gear, create a personal-care checklist, and practice putting on shoes independently, removing them, and putting them away. The plan uses the official bag-decoration activity, an original local checklist activity, and shoe practice with each Scout’s own footwear. See the adventure page for approved plans and handouts..
Safety and respect
- Use washable or permanent markers only with adult supervision and protect the table. Follow product instructions and avoid skin contact.
- Ask families privately about footwear, braces, sensory needs, or mobility accommodations. Offer a stable chair and enough time.
- Do not require a Scout to remove footwear if doing so is unsafe or uncomfortable; arrange an accessible equivalent with the family while preserving the official completion steps.
- Keep bags and shoes out of walkways. Do not compare clothing, family resources, or speed.
Meeting preparation
Overall preparation effort: Medium, driven by providing one bag per Scout, setting up protected work space, and gathering and resetting materials. Adult cutting or assembly is not planned. If bags require a separate purchase, retain the Medium rating; do not assume families will supply them.
- Confirm a bag for each Scout, following the official activity’s stated material. If bags are unavailable, select a verified option before the meeting rather than claiming an unverified substitute.
- Prepare a simple blank checklist page; do not reproduce the handbook page.
- Make a shoe-practice spot with chairs and clear floor space.
- Tell families to send the Scout in shoes they can safely practice with, if possible. No uniform footwear is required.
Supplies
- One reusable bag per Scout as listed by the official bag activity
- Markers and table covering
- Blank paper and crayons or markers for a personal-care checklist
- Each Scout’s own shoes and a stable chair
Pre and post meeting activities for scouts

Leader notes and talking points
Welcome and opening (0:00-0:05)
- Set up: Keep markers capped and bags at each Scout’s place.
- Say: “Today we will make a bag, think about a care routine, and practice a shoe routine.”
- Ask: “What do you like to carry when you come to Scouting?”
- Do: Let each Scout answer, point, or ask their partner to help.
Decorate the Lion bag (0:05-0:20)
- Set up: Follow the materials and instructions on Decorating My Lion Bag. Protect surfaces and provide one bag per Scout.
- Say: “Decorate your bag so you can recognize it. Your adult partner can help hold it steady.”
- Do: Let Scouts choose the design and mark the bag. Adults manage markers and storage.
- Ask: “What Scouting item could go inside?”
- Check: The Scout participates in making the bag and knows it will carry Scouting gear. Use it after the meeting; decoration alone does not demonstrate use.
Movement and hand reset (0:20-0:25)
- Do: Cap markers, place bags aside, and wash hands if needed.
- Say: “Let’s clear our table before making a checklist.”
- Ask: “Is the walkway clear?”
Personal-care checklist (0:25-0:38)
- Say: “Choose a few care steps that help you get ready for your day or bedtime.”
- Do: Ask the Scout and partner to choose routine steps and draw or dictate them on a blank page. Keep the checklist personal and practical; do not copy handbook artwork or page layout.
- Ask: “What is one thing you do to take care of yourself?”
- Check: Each Scout makes a checklist, with adult scribing allowed.
Transition to shoe practice (0:38-0:42)
- Do: Clear the floor, place a chair for each pair, and let Scouts decide whether their shoes are comfortable to practice in.
- Say: “We will take turns and there is no race.”
- Ask: “Would you like to sit or stand while you practice?”
Shoes on, off, and away (0:42-0:55)
- Say: “Show how you put on your shoes, take them off, and put them where they belong.”
- Do: Observe each Scout’s own sequence. Adult partners wait before helping; offer help only when requested or needed for safety.
- Ask: “Where do you put your shoes when you are finished?”
- Check: All required steps are practiced. If a Scout needs help for a step, support them without marking independent completion.
Closing and completion check (0:55-1:00)
- Ask: “Which skill will you use at home?”
- Do: Thank adult partners, close with a den cheer, and check that each Scout completed all three activities.
