Safety and respect
- Notify parents or guardians before showing the specified Lion Protect Yourself Rules video and obtain the permission required by the official guidance. Do not show a generic replacement.
- Do not ask Scouts to disclose personal experiences. Use neutral practice prompts and stop any role-play that becomes uncomfortable.
- Never dial a live emergency number for practice, test an alarm, or trigger a voice assistant’s emergency feature. Keep five trusted-adult names private to the family; do not write them in reusable materials.
- Use only a controlled, vehicle-free crossing simulation. Do not practice in an active street or parking lot.
- Follow current Scouting America youth-protection and reporting procedures. Review the SAFE Checklist and Guide to Safe Scouting.
Meeting preparation
Overall preparation effort: Medium, driven by family communication and permission, checking video access, and preparing a supervised crossing simulation. The exact resources and procedures must be checked against the current official guide. If the video is not completed beforehand, adjust the agenda and leave any dependent activity incomplete rather than rush it.
- Send the required parent notification and confirm permission for the specific 13-minute Lion video. Provide the official link through the approved family communication channel.
- Review the official activity directions and current youth-protection guidance before facilitating sensitive topics.
- Set up a simple indoor crossing simulation with red/green cues and clear walking lanes. No bicycles or moving vehicles are used.
- Tell families that emergency-service practice will not include a live call or sharing private contact names.
Supplies
- Screen and internet access or a legally obtained download for the specified video, if watched at the meeting
- Red and green cards or crayons and a simple indoor crossing layout
- No working phone, alarm, or real emergency service is used for practice
- The parent handout for any video or household step not completed
Pre and post meeting activities for scouts
Before
With parent/guardian permission, watch the specified Lion safety video as directed by the official adventure. If it is not watched before the meeting, arrange a permitted viewing and complete the role-play afterward.
After
With an adult partner, complete the home emergency-access demonstration and privately identify five trusted adults as directed by the official guide. Do not send names or device details to the den. Notify the leader when complete. Use the parent handout for remaining steps only.

Leader notes and talking points
Welcome and opening (0:00-0:05)
- Set up: Keep the room calm, with adult partners beside Scouts.
- Say: “Today we will practice ways to get help and stay safe. You never need to tell the group about a private experience.”
- Ask: “Who is an adult you can talk to when you need help?” Accept a general answer; do not record names.
- Do: Explain that Scouts can ask for a break or pass.
Video check and safety review (0:05-0:15)
- Do: Confirm the specific video was watched and required permission is in place. If playing it now, preserve its full duration and ensure all required notifications are complete.
- Say: “We use the Lion video because it teaches the steps for this adventure.”
- Ask: “Would you like to practice with your adult partner?”
- Tip: Do not summarize sensitive content from memory or show an unapproved substitute.
Shout, Run, Tell practice (0:15-0:30)
- Set up: Use short, imaginary situations from the official guidance; no touch, threat, or personal disclosure.
- Say: “Let’s practice the response from the video with your adult partner.”
- Do: Follow the current official activity directions. Give each Scout a turn and allow a verbal or gesture-based demonstration.
- Ask: “Who can you tell when you need help?”
- Check: The Scout demonstrates the sequence as taught in the specified video; do not add or change steps.
Movement break (0:30-0:35)
- Do: Offer gentle stretching and a quiet reset.
- Say: “Let’s take a breath and make room for the next practice.”
Emergency-services briefing (0:35-0:43)
- Say: “An adult partner will show you at home how your family can get emergency help. We will not make a practice call today.”
- Do: Direct adults to the official activity instructions. Have families keep contact names and device information private.
- Ask privately: “Would your family like help finding the official instructions?”
- Check: Leave this requirement open until the safe demonstration occurs.
Crossing simulation (0:43-0:55)
- Set up: Mark a walking lane and a pretend curb in an area with no vehicles.
- Say: “We practice here, away from traffic. In real life, follow your adult and the official safety steps.”
- Do: Use the official crossing guidance to demonstrate. Let each Scout show the behavior with an adult partner.
- Ask: “What do you check before crossing?”
- Safety: No real road crossing or active parking-lot practice is included.
Closing and family follow-up (0:55-1:00)
- Do: Thank adult partners and close with a den cheer. Give the handout only for steps not complete.
- Say: “Keep practicing safety with your family. No one needs to share private details with the den.”
- Check: Record only completion status and any step still needed.
