About this adventure
Scouts play a game with the den, participate in an obstacle-course relay, and build a box derby and participate in a race. This meeting can complete the first two requirements and begin the car build. The race must occur later with the adult partner before the adventure is complete. See the adventure page for approved plans and handouts..
Safety and respect
- Use a clear, accessible indoor route for the obstacle course; do not include climbing, running into obstacles, or elimination.
- Secure painter’s tape only on a compatible surface. Keep bins and balls out of walking paths between turns.
- Review the official box-derby instructions before cutting. Adults pre-cut and smooth materials; Scouts use only age-appropriate assembly steps with direct adult support.
- Check cord length and fit before wearing a box. Do not race in costume boxes until the adult has checked visibility and secure fit.
- Review the SAFE Checklist and current age-appropriate activity guidance.
Meeting preparation
Overall preparation effort: High, driven by adult preparation of box materials for each Scout, obstacle setup and removal, and a separately coordinated race event. Do not classify the combined work as Low based on the games alone.
- Review the current On Your Mark guide and Lion Box Derby directions.
- Prepare individual box kits using the official instructions; adults handle cutting and check fit and visibility. Do not improvise unsafe cords or attachments.
- Set up a short Portal Obstacle Course and test access with the available participants. Use an alternate accessible route or activity only if it preserves participation.
- Confirm date, location, adult partners, and safe boundaries for the separate race. Tell families the den meeting does not include that final requirement.
Supplies
- Red/green cards or cues for the den game
- Painter’s tape, a clean bin, a bowl, and three tennis balls for the Portal Obstacle Course
- Officially verified box, cord, tape, adhesive, and decoration materials for each Scout
- Adult-prepared cutting and measuring tools, kept out of Scout reach
- The parent handout for the later race
Pre and post meeting activities for scouts

- Requirement 2: Scout participated in an obstacle-course relay.

Leader notes and talking points
Welcome and opening (0:00-0:05)
- Set up: Keep tools and box kits secured until the build block.
- Say: “Today we will play together, try an obstacle course, and start a box car. We will race it another time.”
- Ask: “How can we help everyone take a turn?”
- Do: Explain that no one is eliminated and the goal is participation.
Lion Red Light Green Light (0:05-0:15)
- Say: “Move when I say green; stop when I say red. We keep playing together.”
- Do: Use walking or seated movement choices in a clear area. Let Scouts take turns giving a cue if helpful.
- Ask: “What helps you stop safely?”
- Check: Each Scout participates in a den game; speed is not the goal.
Move and reset (0:15-0:20)
- Do: Clear the floor and inspect the obstacle route.
- Say: “Let’s walk to the course and wait behind the start line.”
- Ask: “Can you see where the path ends?”
Portal Obstacle Course (0:20-0:32)
- Set up: Use the official Portal Obstacle Course materials and directions. Check tape compatibility and clear space.
- Say: “Take your turn at a comfortable pace. Your partner can stay close and help.”
- Do: One Scout participates at a time; no jumping or racing. Offer a seated or guided way to complete each station.
- Ask: “Which part did you try?”
- Check: Each Scout completes the relay participation, not just watches.
Handwashing and transition (0:32-0:37)
- Do: Clean hands if required by materials, remove the course safely, and set out only prepared kits.
- Say: “The adults have prepared the box materials so we can work safely.”
Lion Box Derby build (0:37-0:53)
- Set up: Follow the current official instructions. Adults handle cutting and inspect the completed box for fit, visibility, and secure attachment.
- Say: “Choose how to decorate your box, and ask your partner before changing any part that affects safety.”
- Do: Let each Scout perform age-appropriate assembly and decoration. Do not ask a Scout to use scissors or tools beyond approved guidance.
- Ask: “How will you tell which box is yours?”
- Check: Record the build step separately from the race; do not mark requirement 3 complete yet.
Closing and race follow-up (0:53-1:00)
- Do: Give families the short race handout and confirm the event details when available.
- Say: “Before the race, we will review the rules and good sportsmanship.”
- Ask: “What can you say to another Scout after a race?”
- Check: Leave requirement 3 open until the Scout participates in the race with the adult partner.
